Fundamentals of Digital Photography

This course is aimed at students wishing to master the fundamentals of photography. It will give students the opportunity to learn photography using their digital cameras (DSLR or mirrorless), acquire the skills to use manual settings and use the different shooting modes available on their cameras.

The course is generally offered in the Fall semester and as an online offering during the 7-week Summer School session.

This class has helped me grow substantially as a photographer. I have a much better understanding of the functionality of my equipment and am able to visualize what I want a photo to look like, then achieve it (well, mostly achieve it). I am beginning to use light and shutter speed, working together, to create a specific look and feeling in an image (not just to achieve the correct exposure).

- Tamara Brown

What I learned in one exercise prepared me for the next one.

- Linda C. Grant
The instructor was very articulate and accommodating, committed to the student’s success. She was able to bring the class together and make learning fun. This was probably the most enjoyable course I have ever taken (and I have credits from 7 colleges).

Our work this semester has not only helped me grow as a photographer (yes, I am now comfortable referring to myself as a photographer!), but as a person. At the beginning of the semester, I struggled a bit to marry the technical aspects with composition and spontaneously capturing the shot. I am not a super technical person, but always found that I had an eye for seeing things.

- Tanya Rotolo
I learned a lot in this class!  Before taking it, I had never learned to use a DSLR – my photography was limited to shooting on a point-and-shoot camera, and exclusively to (poorly) document my travels.  I wish I had taken this course earlier!

- Maddie Hickman
Every aspect of this course contributed toward an in–depth introduction to digital photography for beginners and an advance in the mastery of technical details and composition for digital photographers with experience.
